Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen climate change talks fiasco

Lets face it, no matter how you look at it, or whatever kind of a spin you put on it, the Copenhagen climate change talks were a fiasco and a total failure!

Nothing constructive was achieved at these talks; they were hamstrung by rhetoric and discord between developed and developing nations. The so-called accord between 192 nations simply noted that the average world temperature increases should not exceed 2 degrees Celsius. But there are no commitments to any emission cuts to achieve this - just a wish I presume.

The aid charity, Oxfam, warned that by the time of the next scheduled round of United Nations sponsored talks, due, I believe in December, 2010 in Mexico, about 150,000 people would have died and a million more displaced through climate change.

Despite great hopes. President Obama has like the rest of world leaders, failed to achieve anything constructive by any stretch of the imagination.

China has accused Britain's Climate Change Minister's of claiming it(China) hijacked the talks, as an attempt to sow discord among`the poor or developing nations.

In my opinion, for what it is worth, those nations undoubtably saw these talks as a golden opportunity to squeeze some more aid from the "greedy" developed world.

China and many more of the larger developing nations are actually responsible for much of the pollution and subsequent greenhouse gas emissions from alleged human activities.

Why should a little country of 4 million people, such as New Zealand, be penalised by the irresponsible actions of an emerging super power, China, with its 1.3 billion people. It doesn't make sense or seem at all fair, in my book.

New Zealand has been accused of contributing to greenhouse gas emissions through its "farting" dairy cattle herds - I don't know whether sheep and lambs make a significant contribution to GHE as well.

Sorry I don't buy this baloney at all, anymore than the so-called global warming claims made by so-called experts. Think again, do some more homework and come up with something more constructive and credible next time.

China will cut carbon emissions from 2050...

China has announced it will start cutting carbon emissions in 2050. This is one answer to many about what the super economies plan to do to cut carbon emissions to reduce global warming. Now we wait for the USA, Russia and India to follow suit.

Beijing. China will start cutting its carbon emissions by 2050, its top climate change policymaker was quoted as saying in the Financial Times Saturday, the first time the nation has given a timeframe.

"China?s emissions will not continue to rise beyond 2050," said Su Wei, director general of the National Development and Reform Commission's climate change department, according to the paper.

China competes with the United States for the spot as the world's top emitter of greenhouse gases and intense interest is focused on its stance ahead of climate negotations in Copenhagen in December.

The December negotiations are aimed at hammering out a new climate change pact to replace the Kyoto protocol that expires in 2012.

As a developing nation with low per-capita emissions, China is not required to set emissions cuts under the UN Framework on Climate Change, and it has so far also seemed reluctant to accept caps in the future.

For the regime that will emerge after 2012, Su in Saturday's Financial Times seemed to signal a willingness to compromise.

"China will not continue growing emissions without limit or insist that all nations must have the same per-capita emissions. If we did that, this earth would be ruined," he said, according to the paper.

A global truth - the experts debate global warming...

A global truth - the experts debate global warming...

They may not agree on all things pertaining to the problem, but most would say that there is global warming beyond all doubt. Is it a natural phenomenon, or is it man-made? That is the cause for debate; what has caused it and what should we do to rectify the situation, if we can? Or is it too late and que sera sera!

Are the ominous predictions about Earth's climate from 10-20 years ago finally coming true - are the chickens coming home to roost? Are we entering a greenhouse century of rising seas, shrivelled crops, animal extinction and intense heat waves?

It is completely certain that Planet Earth is experiencing some degree of ongoing global warming. You would have to be a complete fool to dispute that fact. But to what degree, is the question you might ask?

When averaged over the entire planet for individual years, it is claimed the temperature of surface air has increased by about one degree Celcius since 1910.

Approximately half of this warming has allegedly occurred during 1970-2000. A recent computer model simulations reported showed conclusively that almost all of the 1970-2000 warming would not have occured without strong simultaneous atmospheric greenhouse gas increase. The reasons for this warming is claimed to be as certain as the fact of the warming. They have a strong case.

The same computer model suggests that the warming will increase by a further 2C to 4C by 2090-2100, depending on the rate of greenhouse gas emission increase due to human activity.

So the debate will continue...and continue!
